First Reactions

I'd planned to write this post weeks ago. But the daytime work load was tough. Now I'm in the second week of my summer vacation (and fifth week without the smartphone) and finally get around to gather some thoughts.

First reactions to our plan to not use smartphone for one year were varied, but mostly positive.

I got mostly comments ranging from "good idea" to "my hero" and "I couldn't do it".

A collegue at work said:

"yes, I think things were better without smartphones. Like, now we communicate all the time, and tell us all the news as soon as things happen. Then, once we meet, there's nothing new to talk about. So everyone is bored and just goes back to using their phones ..."

There were also sceptical reactions:

One friend outright warned us: "You will lose friends!", and went on about how quite a few people these days are not willing to use email for their private communications anymore.

My mother, who by the way turned 89 yesterday, was also quite skeptical. She said:

"some acquaintances who only use smartphones and messengers don't even know I'm still around. I know how to use email, and I don't want to learn anything new. But a lot of people don't know how to use email anymore. Be prepared, some will entirely lose contact with you".

Well, my mother also refuses to use the phone book function on her phone, because she thinks it's not good for her brain. In the morning she dresses, while standing on top of her balance board ... "keep those reflexes in shape" ... she's an amazing person.
